Do Home Security Systems Actually Work?

If you have debated on getting a home security system for your Brooklyn home, then you most likely have asked the question of whether or not home security systems are actually effective in preventing home invasions.

In short, yes they are. Many studies have proven that homeowners who have a security system installed are less likely to fall victim to burglaries. Keep reading to see how home security systems actually work to protect homes.

What do the studies say?

According to several studies conducted by universities and the National Institute of Justice, simply having visible signs of a home security system (signs, cameras, lights etc.) reduce the chance of being targeted by a burglar.

Cromwell-Olson Avary Study

A study sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, called the Cromwell-Olson Avary study found that 90% of a group of 30 burglars said that they would not burgle a house with a home security system. The same study found that 75% of burglars were scared off by a yard sign or sticker, proving that burglars would much rather seek out unarmed homes instead of taking the risks that come along with a home security system.

UNC Study

A UNC study conducted with 400 convicted burglars focusing on their methods and motivations found that 60% of participants would move on to another target if a home security system was present, while over 80% of participants said that they would determine if homeowners had a home security system before attempting a burglary.

Rutgers SCJ Study

The Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice held a four year study that focused on the relationship between burglaries and the presence of home security systems in New Jersey. Interestingly, the study found that security systems are effective in deterring burglars, but they are also effective in protecting neighboring homes as well.

To conclude, burglars are on the hunt for easy targets; they want a home that they can get in and out of fast and without being caught. Homes tend to be safer when there are visible and audible measures of security being taken. Examples include: - Security cameras - Motion sensor lights - Alarms - Signs and stickers advertising the home security system.
